2009 chevrolet malibu review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Gm's accord and camry fighter is up to the task. introductionthe chevrolet malibu is a superb midsize sedan. It strikes a nice balance between well-controlled handling and a smooth ride. Overall, the new malibu feels smooth and is pleasant to drive. the cabin is nicely designed, attractive, and everything is easy to operate, though there are some hard plastics that detract from an otherwise first-rate interior. The seats are comfortable, with plenty of front seat room and a generous rear seat. in short, we think the chevy malibu stands up well when held against the toyota camry and honda accord gold standards. Choosing among them largely comes down to nitpicking, splitting hairs and personal preference. Camry and accord may have an edge on resale value, but they're also likely to come with higher price tags. In any case, we don't see the gap between this chevrolet and the imports that we used to see. the 2009 malibu gets some new equipment. Stabilitrak electronic stability control is standard on all 2009 models. The base model also comes with electric power steering, to save drag on the engine, while the v6-powered models come with hydraulic power steering. The malibu makes good use of its space. Despite the longer wheelbase, the car is only three inches longer than the 2007 model, giving it an attractive wheels-at-the-corners look. the malibu looks masculine, brawny, yet clean and crisp. The bodysides are completely clean and uncluttered, and the twin round taillamps pay homage to the corvette. The dual-port grille is a contemporary chevrolet design cue. We think it works better on the silverado, but it gives the malibu a distinctive look, and distinction is the goal of the midsize sedan designer. Everything within arm's reach and easy to operate. This design is brought into the 21st century with wood and metallic trim and a very pleasing blue-on-white instrumentation graphic treatment that's flooded with blue light at night. less noticeable are thoughtful features such as ambient lighting. A feature associated with expensive luxury cars recently popularized by mercedes and bmw, ambient lighting helps the driver and front passenger find secondary controls and items around the center console. A cubby on top of the dash is convenient for wallets and such, a useful feature subaru has used for years. cloth, faux-suede and leather interior options are available. The standard interiors are monotone, but several two-tone interior combinations are available, including a dramatic black-and-saddle leather combination that's very attractive. we found the leather seats in the ltz quite comfortable. Piping in a contrasting tone dresses them up. The front bucket seats are somewhere between sumptuous and luscious in the way they look and the way they sit, very comfortable and supportive. the stretch in wheelbase affords each occupant plenty of room, and there is ample headroom and legroom in the rear compartment for six-foot-plus passengers. The backs of the front seats are dished out to add knee room. The rear seatbacks flip down to provide a pass-through to the trunk. While that trunk has 15. 1 cubic feet of cargo volume, the rear pillars are pushed to the far back of the car, creating a small trunk opening that won't accept large boxes. the cabin includes a dashtop storage bin, door cubbies, and seatback pockets, plus standard ambient lighting for the overhead console and door-pull pockets. We've never cared for the look of rolled-up sliding covers on center consoles due to their ability to attract crumbs. overall, the malibu interior is attractive and comfortable. The quality of the interior materials is good. We think the malibu's interior compares well to the cabin of the honda accord. In fact, it may be more attractive, though the quality of the material on the steering wheel hub and the hard plastic on the lower dash aren't as nice. However, the chevrolet has an attractive leather shift boot when the leather upholstery is chosen, and the accord can't make that claim. every malibu comes with xm satellite radio and the latest version of onstar with turn-by-turn navigation. However, there's no gps navigation system, nor is there a back-up camera. Chevrolet says people prefer to use their portable gps units and relatively few want to pay for an oem navigation system, but we're a little skeptical of that claim. big knobs and buttons and an elegant design make operating the audio and climate functions easy. In fact, we found it easier and less confusing to make adjustments in the malibu than in a comparably equipped (non-navi) honda accord; the honda seems less intuitive and convenient. Unlike the honda, the chevrolet has the audio controls at the top, better because people tend to fiddle with their stereos more than their temperature controls. the climate controls in the malibu are very easy to operate utilizing big knobs for fan and vent modes and simple, clearly labeled buttons. Honda splits the climate controls up, forcing the driver to examine them more closely before pressing a button. Window switches are conveniently mounted on the doors. Fresh styling, improved gas mileage. introductionthe 2009. 5 pontiac g6 brings a fresh appearance some nice engineering upgrades to this sporty lineup of midsize sedans, coupes and convertibles. a mid-year freshening gives these late-2009 models a sharper look up front, more like that of the top-level gxp. The g6 two-door coupe is sleek and sporty, the convertible features a dramatic folding hardtop, and the sedan is an attractive alternative to other midsize sedans. And several new option packages, which according to pontiac were inspired by consumer demand, make it easier to upgrade and personalize the g6. As before onstar, side airbags and anti-lock brakes are standard equipment on all g6's. we've found the g6 gt and gxp models to have good road manners, even when driven hard, thanks to their long wheelbase and european-designed architecture. This is based on test drives of the g6 gt sedan, gt convertible, and gxp coupe. the price point makes the pontiac g6 a popular choice as a mid-size sedan and we've found it roomy and plush with excellent overall function. The coupe is comfortable and sporty. Standard features also include air conditioning; tilt/telescopic steering wheel; power windows, door locks, and mirrors; am/fm/cd stereo with auxiliary input jack; xm satellite radio hardware; onstar; and 17-inch five-spoke wheels with 225/50r17 tires. The preferred package 370) adds cruise control; remote vehicle starting; leather-wrapped steering wheel, brake handle, and shift knob; and steering wheel audio controls. A special value package deletes some equipment and drops the tire size to 215/55r17 for a credit 1,890). new for 2009 are two sport packages for the base model. Sport package 1 1,245) upgrades to a six-speed automatic transmission for improved performance and economy, and also adds tapshift transmission controls on the steering wheel, a rear spoiler, and stabilitrak electronic stability control. Additionally, the convertible comes with 18-inch machined-face wheels. Backing that up are a sport-tuned suspension, stabilitrak, 18-inch chrometech wheels, unique front and rear fascias, dual chrome exhaust tips, and a leather interior. the sun and sound plus packages for gt 1,535) and gxp 1,125) include not only the sunroof and six-disc cd changer but also 17-inch chrometech wheels for the gt, or 18-inch black chrometech wheels on gxp. The street edition for the gxp 990) adds hood scoops and a hammerhead spoiler. other options include a six-way power driver's seat 200) for the base and gt models, an engine-block heater 75), and various appearance items. A premium package 1,195) for base and gt adds heated leather-appointed front bucket seats and six-way power adjustment for the driver's seat. All models offer the new mylink package 250-395), which bundles one year of onstar directions & connections, a full year of xm satellite radio (rather than the standard 3-month trial), a usb port, and bluetooth phone connectivity. Safety features that come on all models include driver and passenger frontal and side-impact airbags, abs with traction control, and latch child-seat attachments. All models except the convertible come with side curtain airbags as well. Outboard front seat belts have pretensioners and load limiters. Onstar 8. 0 is standard on all models, an excellent safety feature thanks to its ability to summon help. walkaroundthe pontiac g6 models are attractive cars. They have the smooth styling of the latest-generation pontiacs, sharing cues with the solstice roadster and other models and sort of a lexus/toyota look from the rear. The traditional pontiac twin upper grille nostrils are now larger, with sharper corners. The broad lower grille with its narrow center divider is gone completely, replaced by a large trapezoidal opening in the center, flanked by a pair of oblong scoops that sweep up at their outboard edges. In all, the look is sharper, more aggressive than before, and more like that of the high-performance gxp (which remains unchanged). additional new creases in the sedan's rear bumper provide more definition, while echoing the new look up front. Deck-lid spoiler options range from none to a nicely integrated raised lip to the aptly named hammerhead, whose (theoretically functional) side pods resemble the face of its deep-sea namesake. the restyled gt and unchanged gxp now look more alike than before, although the gxp retains its unique front fascia, with more vertical upper nostrils filled with a grille texture that resembles braided stainless steel. The three lower openings are similar in shape to those on the new base and gt, but without the steer-horn molding, and all three are smaller, leaving room for the more prominent upper grille and for separate round foglight nacelles at the sides. The center opening is black while the side openings share the braided-stainless theme. the coupe and convertible inject more excitement into the styling. The frameless windows are indexed, meaning that they automatically open 0. 25 inch when the doors are opened, and close again when the door is closed for a tight seal. From the rear, the coupe and convertible feature narrow taillights and a sloping decklid. the pontiac g6 is built in michigan, from parts and ideas used on the saab 9-3, opel vectra, and chevrolet malibu. interiorthe pontiac g6 has a nice interior with attractive fabrics and comfortable bucket seats. At first, it has that tank-like pontiac feeling of sitting down low in the cockpit, but that feeling goes away in time, and the g6 becomes a happy, comfortable companion. The cabin is altogether different from the old soft-plastic, fat-knob theme of older pontiacs. It's much more modern, more european. the sporty front bucket seats are made for body comfort and support in handling maneuvers. We found them very comfortable thanks to thick padding and sufficient bolsters. rear-seat space benefits from the relatively long wheelbase of 112. 3 inches. In the sedan, a 6-foot, 4-inch passenger can sit behind a 6-foot, 4-inch driver with plenty of room. The coupe's rear seating is a little tighter, and the convertible's tighter still, especially in the shoulder and hip room categories. Instruments and controls are presented in white on black (illuminated in red at night). Every single knob and escutcheon has a chrome ring around it; very tasteful, and nicely presented, with small, conservative graphics on the faces and labels. the center stack has a red-led readout and control panel that makes it easy to use the sound system's features, as well as to customize the locking, lighting, and other functions. The trip computer and driver information system are likewise intuitive and enjoyable to use. the audio system works well and the knobs are sized well for operating while driving, a welcome relief from the tiny buttons and knobs on many systems. However, we miss the smart pre-set buttons used on previous gm vehicles that let the driver switch from favorite am, fm, a.
